Reasons pro and anti death penalty?

Me and my best friends have been having a theological debate on this subject. As Christians do you believe we can support the death penalty? Quote verses of the bible of teachings of the church fathers to back your point up. Also state any reason why you believe it nessecary or unnessecary. Ex: Morally wrong, deters people etc.
