Why do I keep seeing carbon dioxide ociated with greenhouse ges?

I might be mistaken, but I thought carbon dioxide was what we gave off when we exhale. Likewise, plants give off oxygen. I also thought carbon monoxide came from automobile exhaust. I'm confused.
